Today is a both joyous and sad day for us at the Advocacy Center: it marks the last day of our Katrina Aid Today (KAT) grant. The purpose of the KAT grant was to offer support coordination/case management services to Louisiana citizens with disabilities affected by Hurricane Katrina. This grant was sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR).The Advocacy Center's program has exceeded national and state averages in most program indicators. We served more than the 2,640 people. The percentage of people for whom we completed a Recovery Plan is higher than the national average. Also, we were instrumental in getting our clients $6,178,286, or $3,623.63 per client! While a lot of great things were accomplished with this grant, we are sad because several of the wonderful staff members who managed to move mountains with this grant will be leaving us. We would like to thank them for their hard work and commitment to people with disabilities in Louisiana. We wish them luck in their future endeavors.
