I am REALLY a non-confrontational person. That means I am usually reluctant to create a stir or speak out unless I am completely outraged or having a bad day. Maybe because I am such a puny miss, I'm afraid of getting into fisticuffs. I don't know, but I'm definitely the type of gal who will go to great lengths to keep the peace particularly if the situation is temporary and will soon pass. With that said, I still think this video clip spreads an important message. I love it!
When I hear people talk about designated parking like it is a "convenience," I know they don't understand. To get me out of a vehicle, someone has to lift my heavy wheelchair from the trunk, roll it as close to my door as possible, lift me from the car and settle me gently into my seat. It is a process to get me positioned comfortably and to get me wheeled into a building. In the time it takes, an able-bodied person could easily park in the extreme farthest spot and still beat me to our destination.
Three cheers for the United Spinal Association and Paralympian Mark Zupan for developing this public service announcement. Their idea is to remind people to abide by the law and keep designated parking spaces open for people with disabilities. I'm not sure that I will be someone who sticks slips on offenders' windshields (sounds a little scary to me!), but I fully agree with the campaign...60 seconds IS too long to occupy an unnecessary space!
