I believe in serendipity, especially during the sunny season.

During my summer meanderings, I think I have inadvertently come across quite a remarkable discovery.  It will help me in situations where I feel I am being overlooked or misjudged as incapable because of my disability.

I know a plethora of resources exist to help people with disabilities face challenges and deal with unfair practices in the work world.

The Office of Disability Employment Policy exists to provide "national leadership by developing and influencing disability-related employment policy and practice affecting the employment of people with disabilities."

DisabilityInfo.gov is a "comprehensive online resource" designed to give visitors "access to disability-related information and programs available across the government on numerous subjects, including benefits, civil rights, community life, education, employment, housing, health, technology and transportation."

The Job Accommodation Network (JAN) is a service of the Office of Disability Employment Policy dedicated to "providing employers, employment providers, people with disabilities, their family members and other interested parties with information on job accommodations, self-employment and small business opportunities and related subjects."

The month of October has even been designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in order to "increase the public's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities."

With all those great venues noted, I have still done my share of grumbling about the opportunities open to me considering the extent of my disability.  I have been fortunate in that I have found ways to work primarily from home, making use of the strengths I can use to be productive.  I have networked and connected with employers willing to give me a chance to be a contributor.

The next time I encounter frustration, however, I know the measure I am gong to take...I just need to get my foot in the door!
