I know zilch about sports. I already confessed that ineptitude on my Disaboom blog. Nevertheless, I have been following the summer Olympics fairly closely. In fact, lately I have been having fun thinking which of these events might suit me if I wasn't leading my life with a disability.
In a marathon, I could possibly be a contender, because I do have an extreme level of endurance. Track and field, however, really doesn't belong on my list. I may be good at navigating hurdles, but I'm definitely too turtle-like to do any kind of sprinting. Disability or not, I doubt I could ever be that quick on my feet.
I might have a chance at gymnastics. It seems like I know how to wiggle out of tricky situations. "Hanging on" is probably one of my greatest abilities. When it comes to smooth dismounts and perfect landings though, YIKES! I can flip and flop, but doing it gracefully...that's another issue.
The beach and water sports appeal to me, of course, because I'm convinced I'm part mermaid. I believe an ample amount of curious wonder can offset feelings of being marooned. If you get me near the sand or surf, I would be apt to get too dreamy and lose any sense of discipline.
If I could rise from my wheelchair now, the reality is I wouldn't likely be much of an athlete.
In my current state, just watching the Olympics is enough of a sport for me. With the twelve hour time difference between my home and Beijing, I have being watching TV coverage until the wee hours of the morning night after night. The steadiness of the pace is getting to be exhausting, but I'm determined to stay strong. I'm carefully plotting out my snacks to keep my energy level high for a gold medal performance.
