I was absolutely blown away read I read the story of Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth. It is well documented just how daunting this climb is and how many lives Everest has claimed since man first tried to ascend its peaks. Almost 200 people have died trying to climb Mt. Everest, about 10% of those who attempt the feat.
These facts and figures only increased the amazement that I felt when I read the story about six blind teenagers who ascended to the peak of Lhakpa Ri, located next to Everest. Led by Erik Weihenmayer, the Tibetan teens spent three weeks climbing the towering mountain. The struggles and successes during the climb to the 23,000-foot summit was captured and documented in the film "Blindsight," a documentary by Lucy Walker.
