He was the only journalist in a wheelchair covering the Middle East conflict in a wheelchair and he said he felt more "normal" there than he did here in the States. When he needed help, he asked. (And he's pretty independent.) And received it. Whereas here in the States when he needed help it was like pulling teeth at times to get it.

I think some places, by their very nature (like Yellowstone) are difficult to make "fully accessible." (You can't pave over Norris Geyser basin.)

What one person is comfortable doing, another might not be, and yet a third might think is "too easy" to be worthwhile. So it's all in a person's point of view.

re: Should this disabled parking be free?

The gate idea, in this age of microchips and electronic toll etc. might not be so crazy. Maybe there's something embedded in your disabled license plate that triggers the gate. Though I suppose such technology would be prohibitive for the many modest businesses that have to provide disabled parking in their lots.

re: Should this disabled parking be free?

Free or not, able bodied people seem to be attracted to the handicapped spots. This is one of thoes unenforced laws (at least in my area).

Another issue with these is that some disabilities are not as visible as others and so the heirarchy of disabilities is displayed if not externally than most likely internally. I catch myself doing it all the time and then I try to be rational and remind myself that some disabilities are not immediatly apparent.

A solution? All parking permits must be renewed on a yearly basis! I know that it is a pain to get a Dr. note, but frankly don't most of us who have a true disabiling condition go to the Dr. quite frequently? I beleive that this would help. A very far out idea that I just had is why not make the spots gated until a bar code is scanned and the permit is accepted. I know that there could be alot of bugs in this idea, but non disabled people would not have access to the spots.

I really don't have an answer, our world is not perfect and it never will be, so we all should just keep our chins up and cope with this situtaion.

Hey!
D: Not that great of exercise for me. I'm usually standing in the Lego store with our youngest or waiting out my wife and our 17 year old who are in a store while I'm out on a bench! But I suppose pushing our son's wheelchair helps.

Up where we live in the mountains, the malls are at a minimum hour drive away. So if we're going down, why not make a trip out of it?

Hope you and your family have a wonderful New Years!

For starters it brought out my son's ingenuity if not larceny. He called and invited his Mom and I to have Christmas dinner with his family at his house. I reminded him I couldn't get into his house.

He said, "You can now. And by the way, when you leave home use your back door. There's no ramp at your front door. I borrowed it so you could have dinner with us."

Merry Christmas!
