"Read my hips!" said a sassy Marlee Matlin in a clip where the dancers were sending out messages to viewers.
As I watched "Dancing with the Stars" each night, I couldn't help but be totally blown away by Marlee Matlin's dancing. The girl has talent! And I think the reason why she shines so well is because as she says on her MySpace website, "I'm dancing just to prove to myself that I can."
Last night, the kids wandered in just before Marlee and Fabian began dancing and I had to beg them to stay and watch. "Ballroom dancing? Oh come on, Mom!" But once they saw Marlee move to the music, they were mesmerized. "She can really move!" said my teenaged son, David. I'm sure he appreciated her curves as well as her dance moves.
"How does she move to the music if she can't hear it?" my neighbor asked me.
Like me, Marlee can hear some sounds through a hearing aid but can't make any sense of them through hearing aids alone. Starkey outfitted Marlee with some high-tech hearing aids that eliminate feedback sounds (those high pitched sounds that are unleashed when the hearing aid moves or something is placed too close to the ear) and enable her to move around freely without the hearing aids flying off of her ears.
What gives Marlee a great edge in the competition is that she has a natural sense of rhythm and it shows. She's not distracted by noises or conversations (with the exception of what Jack Jason interprets for her), so being deaf can work out to a nice advantage.
It is the votes that count and keep the couples in the competition. To vote for Marlee and Fabian: Dancing with the Stars Voting Information.
As for me and my family, we'll be glued to the TV watching Marlee's hips until the finals!

I have a hard time catching the show (because of the time its on and my schedule) but I try to watch all her interviews/specials in between and she's totally my fav. I hope she wins...I've looked up to her since I was a little girl.
I have always liked Marlee, but then, who doesn't? As a former dancer, I envy her. She has such fun!
She always presents herself so well. Such a positive role model as a deaf mom, as an actress, as a woman.
Because she can't hear the distractions, she can be fully Present. Awesome!
