According to the chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, the future of a proposal to have Florida Democrats vote in a mail-in primary is dim.
Karen Thurman, who created the plan, said Thursday that if the party didn't receive a consensus of support from the Clinton campaign, the Obama campaign, and the DNC over the weekend, the proposal would be effectively dead.
The mail-in plan could cost up to $12 million, which would be raised by contributions from private donors solicited by the Florida Democratic Party.
However, the Florida Democratic Party only raised $5 million during all of 2007, leaving many to doubt that the effort could actually be financed through private donations.
Additionally, the state's Democratic Congressional delegation unanimously rejected the proposal last week, and is unlikely to have a change of heart.
Senator Clinton's campaign supports the mail-in election vote, as well as any form of re-vote in the state excluding a caucus--a kind of contest that Mr. Obama has shown to be extremely strong in.
Predictably, Senator Obama's campaign opposes a mail-in primary, which would most likely benefit Clinton.
Both Florida and Michigan were stripped of their delegates as punishment for moving their primaries ahead in the schedule.
Although the candidates and most Democrats agree that a re-vote would be appropriate, a lack of money and an inability to agree on the structure of the new contest may kill off attempts at a new election.
Do you have a stellar idea for how to best facilitate the Florida and Michigan re-votes.?
