The time has come for us to lend our support and our voting power to the candidate who understands the needs of our community. We deserve a president who believes that we want to be active members of society, who will support our efforts to join the workforce, and who will set a policy agenda that gives us choice and access to the same services as all Americans so that we too can be part of the American dream.

John McCain was instrumental in crafting key sections of the landmark 1990 ADA legislation, prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities in hiring and promotions, extending that same protection to disabled people employed by state and local governments.

Today we have the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), which helps state and local governments make polling places accessible to individuals with disabilities, including the path of travel, entrances, exits, and voting areas of each polling facility. It affords the disability community the same opportunities for access and participation as all other voters by guaranteeing privacy and independence, providing accessibility information, and training election and polling officials and volunteers on how best to ensure the rights of voters with disabilities are met. Thanks to HAVA, Americans with Disabilities have better access to polling places than ever before.

Re: The Numbers Speak for Themselves: Disaboom's Latest Survey

I must say, I was pleased to see that almost 58% of the disability community felt that Barack Obama would make a better choice to help our community at this juncture, than John McCain. As we learn more about Obama daily, it is becoming apparent that he is focusing on the disenfranchised, a category of people in which the disability community falls. A truly multicultural community comprised of people of every race, creed, culture and sexual orientation, the disability community can have an amazingly strong voice in this upcoming election. The community represents a significant portion of diverse minority communities who can help put Obama in the White House and help make the changes we need to see happen. If ever there was a time, to make our voices heard--it's now!

91% of People with Disabilities Think They Receive Less Attention than Other Minority Groups from Presidential Candidates...75% of Americans Disagree.

The results of a survey done concerning the disability community and the presidential candidates.

Re: The Numbers Speak for Themselves: Disaboom's Latest Survey

I am not surprised at the poll results. I'm not sure why there is not as much attention on the needs and sensitivities of the nations largest minority group. Perhaps it is a big oversight or an opportunity they are missing. Could it be that it only becomes a major issue when disability hits close to home? I do not know but there must be some reason the demographics of the disabled community are not at the top of the list. Let's get a discussion going. Why do you think of the polll and why? .I am a stroke survivor and I believe that it is hard for anyone to really understand how lives can be changed forever when any type of disability strikes without warning. Perhaps the demographics that appear overlooked are considered as part of another cluster. For now, it does not appear that this perceived oversight will change. Perhaps this new data will help give political advisors a different insight. In the mean time, I encourage everyone with a disability to remain focused on the positive and approach each day with an attitude of gratitude. Eventually, the voices will be heard.

With any drug there is going to be a small number of people who have a reaction from minor to potentially life threatening. My father had serious problems with the tetanus shot made with equine blood. My mother can't use quite a few things including neosporin based compounds. I have neither of these problems. Should a drug that has the potential to save many lives not be used on anyone because some have a reaction? Of course it should be continued to be used. People should be watched after the administering of any drug for signs of a problem and warned of any dangers. Here in Australia where Gardasil was developed there have been some problems too but most people have taken it without a hitch including men. It has been suggested that men take it too as they can also develop HPV but it only causes genital warts in men. However it can be spread by men. (The inventor has taken it himself as have his sons.)

Re: My Scary Stint with the Gardasil Vaccination

It's a bummer that you had a bad reaction to it.

You should send your story out to the National Parent and Teacher Association to let them have your clear story of the side effects related to Gardesil.

However, the story made me very concerned for those mothers and daughters who are not as savvy as you to know that what was happening WAS NOT normal. Would they have spent the money to go back to the clinic or doctor to tell them there was a problem. Would they have gone back a second time or would they thought the problem was them?

So, I wondered at the time you were given the shot-:

Was there enough information asked before they gave you the shot for you to determine you might have an allergic reaction?

Did they ask you if you had the specific allergies known to trigger an allergic reaction to Gardesil before they gave you the shot?

Did you ask if there were any known allergic reactions before they gave you the shot?

two

Were you given a contact number to call if you did experience a reaction?

and three

Did you send in a report to Merck and the FDA letting them know you had an allergic reaction so it could be counted in the statistics on side effects?.

If not, here is the web address for Medwatch,

http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/report/consumer/consumer.htm

Here also is the lastest t science information on the web about Gardesil I was able to find.:

Thanks for all that you do by writing so clearly.
