Here's to Pluss, an exemplary company in the UK that more companies in the US ought to emulate:
A south West company dedicated to employing people with disabilities has been named as one of five outstanding organisations nationally.
More than half of the 500-strong workforce at Pluss - which provides employment and equipment services to disabled people - have a disability. The employer has now been rewarded with a special Star Social Firm status for creating rewarding jobs within a market-led business for people who would otherwise have substantial problems finding employment.Pluss is owned by Plymouth city, Devon county, Somerset county and Torbay councils, and has supported more than 2,000 people to work and train over the past year and has an annual turnover of GBP20 million. It is the UK''s largest social firm.It also runs two commercial businesses across 30 sites where it directly employs 500 people, 260 of whom have a disability. The "equipment" business provides mobility equipment to more than 200,000 elderly and disabled people across the South West and the "manufacturing" side has contracts with companies such as telecoms giant BT and luxury bed-maker Vi-Spring.
