Use A Catchy Title
I don’t know how many times my mind is blown by the fact that someone has used such a skull-numbingly, boring title for an otherwise interesting post. Get creative and get loud, but make sure that your title adequately describes what your post is about. Also, be careful that you're not so witty that you're esoteric. No matter how clever and alliterative your 19th century Russian history reference is it doesn't mean jack to the visitors to your tech blog. So bag it.
Keep It Short and Sweet
Only a masochist would exceed 750 words, and unless your audience has an admitted love for your long windedness, you should get your message out in fewer than 500. Also, make sure to reveal what you’re talking about right off the bat. Don’t get cute with introductions that don’t immediately reveal the topic at hand.
Don’t Do Grotesque Things With Format
Make sure your font is large and legible, and not absolutely hideous. Stick with something simple like Georgia, or, if you want to take a walk on the wild side, Arial. Use paragraphs more frequently than you would in normal writing. Breaks help the user navigate content more easily.
Link Like Your Life Depends On It
Because your blogging existence does. Linking to other sites helps raise awareness of your blog, establishing you as a ‘true player’ in the blogosphere. Also, those you link to may return the favor by linking to you in the future.
Get Imagistic
If you’ve got a snappy image that compliments your blog post, you’d be dumber than a pack mule not to use it. Starting a blog post with an intriguing picture is like dropping a big fat squirming worm in front of a bass-- it draws your traffic in hypnotically. Don’t believe me, well then try to bounce away from this blog in under thirty seconds.
Ha, couldn’t do it could you. I would admonish you for your lack of self-discipline, but I’m just as guilty. Nevertheless, I've got to truncate this post now. Otherwise, I’ll be in danger of breaking a few rules myself.
