I've noticed a troubling trend in blogs lately. Everywhere. I think it's great people blog, but apparently some of them have missed the memo on how write. I'm not being elitist. I'm being realist. It's hard to read a blog if you...well, can't read it!
So if you want to write a blog that can't/won't be read, here's the best two ways to do it:
1) WRITE IN ALL CAPS AND ESPECIALLY DONT USE ANY PUNCTUATION BECAUSE LETS FACE IT THAT TAKES TIME TO WRITE AND NO ONE WANTS TO BE SLOWED DOWN BY A PERIOD EVEN IF YOU REALLY SHOUD USE ONE AND ALL CAPS ARE VERY HARD TO READ ON THE EYES AND OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING AT ME AND DONT FORGET TO NEVER USE PARAGRAPH BREAKS BECAUSE THEY JUST MAKE EXTRA SPACE IN THE WRITING
2) letz uz txt msg wrds Bcz evry1 is uzing thm shows im hip and wanna tlk 2 U esp.
I'm NOT saying (see, that's an appropriate use of capitalization for emphasis in a post) every writer should be Hemingway or Faulkner. I'm not the world's best speller. I goof up - I am the first to admit it. That's why I use peer review critiques for my fiction. However, the form and function of a blog is to communicate to people. If you write in all caps it's the internet equivalent of SCREAMING. Not to mention, writing in all caps is VERY difficult to read. (Again, another proper example of using capitalization for emphasis.) If you don't want to be troubled by using the shift key, then have the courtesy to do it in all lower case. It's still a pain to read if you don't use proper punctuation, but at least it's easier on the eyes than all caps.
Use paragraphs. Separate your thoughts to make them easier to read. Everyone has a right to blog, and the easier you make it for your readers to READ what you're trying to say, the more likely it is you will get feedback on what you write. Or at the very least, they'll want to keep reading what you write in the future.
Now, go blog something. But please, keep your finger off the friggin CAPS LOCK button!
Indeed.
Right on! Or should that be 'write on'? And how about putting spell check to good use, or even *gasp* dusting off the 'ol dictionary (remember those?) and using it?
What I sometimes wouldn't give for a cyber red pencil! ;-)
Fer sher!!! A big YES, and kudo's to all on this page!
I've all but given up reading many Disa-Bloggers in here, except those I've come to depend on for a good read, and won't create a pain in my brain.
Many thanks for this tale of caution. To bad most 'screamers' will probably miss it.
*Also, searching in vain for that elusive electronic red pencil.*
All my best,
Olivette
