Hey! This is my first blog here at Disaboom so I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself. Here it goes...
<br>
My name is Meg. I am from the state of Wisconsin. (Yes, I am a cheese head AND a Packer fan.) I have cerebral palsy. I'm classified as a spastic quad, but I don't really think that classification fits me. I can not walk. My legs are affected the most. I have full use of my right hand and arm but with my left arm, I can not turn my palm up and have bit of limited movement.
I'm a lesbian. I'm not trying to flaunt it or make a big deal of it but that is who I am. I know from first hand experience that many people have different issues with this. My family and friends are part of that group of people so that do not know, which is okay with me at this point and time. If any of them find out in one way or the other that is okay but I'm not going to make a big announcement at the gathering of friends and family. For this reason, you probably will not find any pictures of myself on my page. If friends and family come across me on this site, they will know who it is just from reading about me. I also what to mention here, a phrase I always heard growing up. "Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me." This is a statement that I try to live by. Things will be said to try to hurt me, but guess what chances are it won't hurt me. What bothers me the most is seeing others get hurt by those exact same words. It is not right. Everyone is different. Not one person is exactly the same as another. No body is perfect either. Everyone has their flaws and should not be criticized for the lifestyle they choose to live and the things they choose to do with their life.
Anyway, I love to work with people. I really like to work with kids but I like to work with everyone else too. One of my goals in life is to make a difference in people's lives. Another goal I have is to become a Reading Specialist and work with kids that struggle with reading. Another goal I want to achieve to help people have a better understanding of disabilities. I have come across many people who think I can not do things because of my disability. I know I am not the only one of the people I know with disabilities. In the work I have done with kids, I know that they can be apprehensive of people who have disabilities just because they are unsure of the differences. I want to help people learn more about disabilities and show them that most people who have a disability can do the exact same things they can but they just have to do them a little differently. I have yet to figure out how I am going to accomplish that but I'm always thinking about it.
I'm about to graduate from college in May, after 3 changes in my major. I started out as a Social Work major and I am now an English major. I love to write. I have noticed that a lot of my writing is focused on disabilities or living life with a one. I'd love to write more about that somehow as part of the awareness I talked about earlier but I just have not figured out how to connect it all together yet...It is still a work in progress.
When I'm not in school or doing school related things, I like to spend time with my godchildren. I also like to read (which I don't do much of besides college textbooks right now), watch sports (especially soccer), and I've recently gained an interest in digital scrapbooking. I haven't done much with it yet but I enjoy it.
I thank you for taking the time read my first blog!

Meg great job on your first blog! You and I have talked several times now and you have a good head on your shoulder and use common sense. Stick with the English major, it will open a lot of doors. It did for me. I know the last few days have been a little tiresome for you with stuff but your surviving great. One of these days I'll figure out the blogs. I hope to read more about you in the future. Hang in there. You have a good attitude about the sticks and stones. That can be difficult. You know who you are and you accept yourself! That's a great head start. Shelley
Hey Shelley you were an English major, too? Right on!
