Fight or Flight

4/1/2008 at 04:08 PM

Can we ever really know the value of life… the calm before the storm…. the view from outside our bodies… I had a rather traumatic weekend in which the value of life was brought to a shuttering halt before my eyes… I was off roading in a place I go weekly (and was that same morning) and “stumbled” upon a deadly ATV crash… My dad has always told me – you make important decisions in life long before you are in the event… It’s fight or flight… Some people are made to make a stand – and some wait in the wings. So I was driving with my friend up this dirt road – we come to a stop – as a car in front of us had slowed down – The thought was that maybe these people were asking for directions – I slow down and nothing was said – I look over to my right and see people laying down – my first thought was are they sleeping off in the woods? Then I see an ATV up almost in a tree – and realize this is not good. I jump out automatically of the car – as it’s my first instinct to help! I’ve worked in Trauma rooms and ER and knew it was not good. It seems the 2 people that had stopped were freaked out by the situation – and had called 911 but just let the kids be. I ran up to check the girls pulse – sadly none – she was cold – and stuff coming from her mouth, nose, ears etc – (a picture in my head I’d rather not share as it was horrific)… I go to the boy and he is breathing – and jerking… I was yelling to him that help was on the way – not to move – and we were going to get him taken care of etc… You know it’s odd – I was probably the youngest of the people there and the only one to jump into action… is that a blessing or a curse… Does one let their selfishness of not seeing a tragic event hold them back from calming one in need? It’s astounding to me that people can sit by and allow fear to hold them back. This is SOMEONE’s CHILD!!! If your child was laying on the side of the road dying will you JUMP IN or will you stand by? Ask yourself!!!! Make the decision now that we are ALL connected in life – seen and unseen – and if you find yourself there – be the first to make the move!!! The news reports have said the girl died on scene – and the boy is in critical condition…. I ask you send a prayer out for the families…. And for peace to prevail! Love is really all there is – the rest we make up! *namaste*

How sad for the girl-- I'm sure the boy was grateful to have your help.  I have come upon accidents and reached out the same way-- during the shock-- many don't remember but I'm sure it's comforting all the same.
