I had a great time at Josh Blue's show, sponsored by Disaboom, last night! Lots of Disaboom employees came wearing white Disaboom t-shirts, but it became rapidly very hard to spot the employees in the crowd, because several folks got up and tossed Disaboom shirts to the audience. Soon so many people were wearing them that I couldn't tell where my coworkers were sitting!
Josh Blue's assistant (who I didn't know was his assistant until later) spotted my tee and asked if I knew if there were any more shirts- I didn't know, but asked JW, who kindly gave the gentleman his card and offered to send him as many t-shirts as he would like. Then Josh's assistant told me he worked for Josh, and I started doing the starstruck babbling thing- I'm a huge fan of Josh Blue. He is the only comic my SO and I both like. It was pretty cool, and we exchanged business cards- well, we exchanged his business card for my boss's business card, because I still don't have my own yet...
Chuck Roy, known locally for his fake marijuana news, played on a local rock station, was MC and host, and warmed the crowd up by making fun of a rich white guy in the front row, who took it all in very good humor and received a substantial amount of free wine courtesy of Mr. Roy for his trouble. Hippieman opened the show and discussed his plan for America, which included such gems like buying five SUVs and running them on blocks 24/7 to help use up all the oil in the world so people will finally do something about alternative energy.
By the time Josh Blue took the stage, the crowd was already roaring, and Josh hit all the right notes with his comedy about disability, the paralympic soccer team, politics, and even NASCAR. The latter was a high point for me, with Josh shouting, "Where my NASCAR fans at?" and upon getting a smattering of applause from a few folks scattered in the crowd, yelling, "Get the F*** OUT!" This part received uproarious applause from the non-NASCAR fans in the audience. Another favorite joke of the evening was an anecedote related to the old 'inspirational' cliche about people with disabilities:
"I was walking around in Denver a few years ago, before even Last Comic, and this lady says to me, 'I think it's so inspirational that you're OUT!' I was like, 'Lady, I'm on my way to the liquor store- does that inspire you? I know it inspires me!'"
Josh had the crowd in stitches the entire evening, and ended the show by introducing his fiancee. They are expecting a child- congratulations, Josh, if you're reading this! I grabbed a Josh Blue DVD on the way out and got to briefly say hello to Josh Blue and his fiancee. It was a fantastic show, and Disaboom sponsoring it is beyond cool. JW Roth, the CEO, and founder Glen House appeared on stage with Josh briefly, and Josh's suggestion that everyone in the audience check out Disaboom got a big round of applause. So hopefully we see some newbies who are big Josh Blue fans soon!

Josh ALWAYS has me rolling in the aisles... of course, I'm usually on a scooter or rollator. ;-)
I attended the show last night as well - absolutely brilliant! More fun than human beings should be allowed to have. My favorite part was watching him mimic the folks who don't find his CP-deprecating humor funny - he'd tell a joke about how he loves being on the Paralympic team because he gets so much material from them, and then he'd fold his arms, frown, and shake his head; how many times have I seen people do that when I make jokes about MS? "THAT'S not funny; you shouldn't be saying that!" Oh PLEEZE. If you don't have a funny bone, go get one installed, okay?
Josh is a HUGE inspiration - I know he's heard this a thousand times by now, but it always does my heart good to see someone who not only takes his disability in stride, but he uses it to his best advantage and does the world good with it. With people like Josh out there, the disabled community will soon cease to be pitied and forever be accepted as regular people with a quirk or two. After all, "disabled" folks are really just people whose disabilities you can SEE or HEAR - the rest of you hide yours much better than we do. :-)
hi saydrah, nice post. i've seen you around the sites and i wanted to introduce myself and say hello. it's nice to meet you :) xoxo
Hi Debbie! I certainly have seen you around :) You are certainly the life of the party on the discussion boards- so many posts!
Oh and btw fretlessman, JDub the CEO mentioned your great bass playing :)
He's just biased - Jennifer is a spell-binding piano player who can make men believe just about anything she wants to. ;-) But the compliment is well received and appreciated!
Y'all had fun and didn't invite the rest of us? :) I love Josh and want to see him when he comes to Illinois!
