Scott Ferguson, who is blind, was asleep in his Farmington, PA home when his pet dog began barking. When he woke to check on the dog, Ferguson opened his bedroom door and felt heat. He realized his home was on fire, grabbed his cell phone, and jumped out the window, suffering minor scrapes and scratches.
Once out of the house, Mr. Ferguson used his cell phone to dial 911. After alerting emergency responders, Ferguson returned to the house to rescue his dog.
Both the dog and Scott Ferguson are safe and uninjured, and the Red Cross has provided food, clothing, and temporary housing for Ferguson. Fire crews will continue to investigate, but the fire is believed to have been accidental. The living room and kitchen of the home were destroyed, and the entire structure has sustained serious smoke and water damage.
