If you ever wonder whether or not airline and helicopter pilots really earn their pay, wonder no more. I ran across these photos and all I have to say is, sometimes you really, really, really gotta trust the pilot:

An airplane landing strip located right at the shoreline, and very short, making it quite possible for the plane either to land in the water or fail to stop by the end of the runway.

This is Tioman Island, off the coast of Malaysia. That's a lot of water, and not much runway...

A very narrow island with a runway at its widest part and water on all sides.

Here we have Wake Island, which is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. On the bright side, you could land a pretty wide plane here. On the other hand... is it too late to change my mind and opt to go to Tioman Island after all? At least that one only had the ocean on two sides of the runway.

A runway jutting out into the ocean, so narrow the plane sitting on it has its wings hanging off on both sides.

This one is from Macao International Airport. It looks pretty safe, just as long as the pilot isn't one of those drivers who looks over his shoulder and accidentally jerks the wheel sideways....

A runway on a cliff, with a drop of hundreds of feet into the ocean on either side.

This one's in Kuujjuaraapik, Quebec! That must be Quebecois for "You want me to land this thing where?!"

A Blackhawk helicopter has landed on the roof of a shack on top of a cliff. Several soldiers are running to board the heli.

This photo was taken by a National Guard member during a helicopter rescue mission in Afghanistan. Repeat after me: "No matter how bad my day was, at least there's not a Chinook helicopter on top of my house. No matter how bad my day was, at least I didn't have to land a Chinook helicopter on a shack on top of a cliff."

A yellow helicopter has landed atop a narrow, very tall rock in the middle of the ocean.

Here we have a young military pilot practicing helicopter landings atop a rock off the coast of Greenland. You mean to tell me they do this stuff for fun?

In the photo from Afghanistan, that helipcopter is a CH-47 "Chinook," not a Blackhawk.

The black helicopter is a CH-47 Chinook not a Blackhawk.

I went overseas from Travis AFB to Tachikawa Japan on a DC-6 and it took 32 flying hours. We stopped over in Honolulu and proceeded to Wake Island, one of the images in your posting. I woke up at dawn and we were just a few feet off the water. I thought "Oh S**T!! We're ditching in the ocean!!" About that time we touched down at Wake Island. The runway covers most of this little atoll....water on both sides.
