As a very paralyzed, young woman who lives on her own, I'm pretty dependent on my PCA's. A PCA means "personal care attendant" for those of you not in the know, and I require help every AM and PM. If it wasn't for my PCA I wouldn't ever get out of bed, ever shower, ever get dressed; none of it. I need a reliable PCA. Well, as of late I've realized that my M - F PCA may be a Hypochondriac. Yes, she's obsessed with the idea that she's always sick with something, even though she's wrong 8 out of 10 times.
I feel kinda bad complaining about her. I gotta say. Thank God she doesn't know about this blog (knocks on wood). Last Thursday night however was the final straw. I just got back from seeing Sweeny Todd (Which btw sucks majorly. Cannibalism is not funny!) and I had a voicemail waiting from her. She was in the ER with sharp stomach pains. She thought it was Appendicitis, and being that the Docs at her clinic had no idea what was causing the pain, they had no choice but to tell her to go to the ER...just in case. Long story short, she waited 4 hours for nothing. The pain she was feeling wasn't even in the same area as the Appendix. In all likelihood, it was probably gas or indigestion.
She wanted Friday morning off even though she wasn't sick. My problem though was that I don't have any other PCA's who can fill-in for her M - F AM shift. All 4 other of my PCA's are students. I was desperate. I felt trapped. I hated being in this situation. Even though I knew she's not sick, I still wanted to give her the morning off. So I went on Craigslist that very night and posted ad want ad looking for a fill-in PCA. So far I've received 10 responses. Gotta love Craigslist :)
I'll keep ya'll posted as the developments ensure...

Sometimes I think the hardest part of disability is the dependence it brings with it. I worked my whole life to take care of myself, then, oops, suddenly I can't.
Well, good luck finding a reliable and healthy PCA. It would be nice to have back ups.
Being on a university campus with over 50,000 students, it's easy for me to get undergrads for PCAs. They are plentiful, cheap to hire, and generally reliable, but yeah, not so big on the mornings. I am lucky that I am super flexible with when I can receive help because I can handle most every day stuff, but need help with laundry, snow shoveling, and grocery shopping. Glad you had such a great Craig's list response.
thx vicki for your encouragement. i agree, if i didnt need a PCA my disability wouldnt seem half as bad.
tiff
consider yourself lucky crip that you dont absolutely 100% NEED PCA's.
This is clearly the most frustrating thing for an independent soul to deal with. Good PCAs are hard to find and impossible to keep. Best hopes your way on this one Tiff.
BTW. I made up my mind not to see ST. I really like Depp and Burton but a slasher musical...no thanks.
Stay Strong...
thx rehab :) do wait for ST. you'll be glad you did.
Please be VERY careful about Craigslist stuff. Especially here in the Twin Cities. Seems like there is a new scam every other day.
