Is it possible to make it look good? Has anyone out there done it before? I'm sure, out of the billions of people in India, there has to be at least one woman over there who's managed to work a sari in a sexy way from a wheelchair, but then again.....disabled people over there aren't exactly treated that equally. In fact, they're treated like horsesh**. That's why at the "Bollywood Bash" I'm throwing next Saturday, I'm setting up a "Give To India" fundraiser table, so party attendees can give money to help a disabled Indians recieve a wheelchair.
So back to the gorgeousness that is the sari. It's a very old traditional piece of clothing that Indian women have been wearing for centuries. They are traditionally worn with an underskirt (a petticoat) and a choli (a midriff-baring blouse) underneath, because since essentially the sari is just a long, beautiful piece of fabric artistically wrapped around a woman's body, it can't cover all the important parts with a money-back guarantee.
Yesterday I went on the hunt, locally, for a sari. They tend to be very expensive ($50+) because most are imported from India. Most are also handmade, and making it even more expensive, handbeaded. As you can see from the sari pictured on the left, the beading can get very intricate and well....amazing. Some sari's can cost upwards of $500 (especially the ones for wedding ceremonies).
As I'll be he hostess of my fabulous upcoming Bollywood party, I simply must look the part. I bought the faux, nose-to-earring hold chain piece of jewelry, I bought the matching, dangly, gold earrings, I bought a package of awesome bindi appliques (the fancy dots between the forehead), and 20 matching bracelets (in yellow and bright green).
I was lucky yesterday. I found a used white, green, and yellow sari for $27. You have no idea how lucky of a find that was. I haven't tried it on yet (will need from my PCA to help me with a trial run "wear" this week), but I'll keep you posted (and maybe even post some pictures) of how the sari ends up looking from my chair.
Wish me luck!
