Doubtful. In fact, neither of my cats would. Let's forget the fact that even if they wanted to, they really physically couldn't do much except meow really loud to get my neighbor's attention, or if they were genius cats, drag me my cell phone. But no, they don't really like humans that much. They just tolerate us.
I was thinking this the other day as I sat and watched my cats in my living room, doing their "usual" cat-like behavior. They're not the most exciting cats in the world, but hey, they're mine. They need me. If it wasn't for my benevolence, they'd probably have been exterminated eons ago. One is old and extremely anxious, the other is a plain old hellion (and young!) and gets into EVERYTHING. She literally drives me batty. Ever been stuck in bed alone, as you watch helplessly as your cat chews on your laptop cord? Yes, welcome to my world.
But here's the deal, despite them not really caring I exist (as long as I give them food, water, and pet them every now and then), if I fell out of chair and died, they wouldn't care. They're just that type of animal. Now dogs on the other hand, well certain breeds to be more specific, would freak their freak (in the bad way) if their owners croaked....or fell of of the chair. That's why sometimes I contemplate trading-in my cats for a loveable Great Dane or the coolest dog EVER, a Golden Doodle.
I live in a tiny condo though, so I guess it'll be just me and my cats...for now ;)

My first experience with a cat was when my best friend guilt tripped me into "adopting" a stray that had jumped into his car to escape the cold. He was a great cat for about 2 weeks and then he became the cat from hell. So much that I gave him the nickname "Bubby" which was short for Beelzebub (a.k.a. Satan)I would also ocasionally call him "Stevil" which was a combination of stupid and evil. I had always heard that a squirt bottle was a good tool for training a cat, but not in the case of good ol' Bubby. He would simply smirk at me as if to say "thanks for the spritzer, no I am going to go back to destroying your home" He used to use my hand as a scratching post when it would dangle between the slats in my bed post while I was asleep (heck of a wake up call) The final straw was when he decided to urinate on my bed instead of his litter box which was about 4 feet away.
I however did have my faith in cats restored when I took care of my parents cat while they were in Florida. Cali is the greatest cat ever. She is affectionate and smart and playful and knows where she can and cannot urinate and knows that my hand is NOT a scratching post!
p.s. the phrase "Golden Doodle" always makes me giggle!
I do love the doodles, golden or otherwise.
You'd be perfect for a service dog Tiff. And a doodle would be perfect. A great place to start if you're thinking about a pooch is with the books written by The Monks of New Skeete. Fun to read and the books give a lot of insight into how dogs "work".
brent...lol...thats a great story! funny kitteh!
tim,
i actually dont want a helper dog. i know, weird. but i dont think id utilize it much.
Hah...Speaking of laptop cords, my puppy chewed through mine yesterday. :P
I'm the same way Tiff. I relly couldn't justify a service dog. But, a well trained dog is a wonderful thing. And a service dog can go wherever...kinda cool. I just have this picture of Tiff with her doodle named Bowie. Wowser.
"bowie"
how did you know?!
there are actually a lot of benefits to having a service dog that go well beyond just the tasks. My dog Coco allowed me to be a part of the community again, mostly due to the fact that ppl are generally more comfortable around a dog than a person in a wheelchair (etiquette thing I suppose).
I'd love to have a dog and have considered applying for an assistance dog - one way to get around the "no dog" rule - but, I too, am not sure how much a dog could really help me. And I'm not sure about walking a dog several times per day, particularly in the rain. Probably best to leave that resource for those who would really benefit from it.

For now, I'll enjoy my kitty.
