Looking at me on the street, you wouldn't think I'm one of those girls, but oh yes, I am "one of those girls" more than you could ever ever imagine. That's right, I'm a geek; a Queen Geek. I go to comic book conventions dressed-up in costume (last year was my first time going to one of these geekilicious events) and I went as a member from Team Zissou from the awesome movie - "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou." My friend and I seriously formed a Minnesota "Freshwater" chapter and created costumes that looked like they were stolen from the set (see pic to the left).
I also am a huge fan of Renaissance festivals/faires. Here in Minnesota every August - September (held every weekend for about 7 weeks straight) is the largest Renaissance festival in the country, with it held on a whopping 26 acres. I have 4 different period costumes that I wear (and boy do my PCA's dread this time of year) ranging from "peasant" to "Noble lady." I wear the corset, the layered skirts, everything. I'm a huge history buff and love dresses from the Elizebathan era (1500's). I'm a huge dork, what can I say. Even though I'm stuck rolling around in a powerchair, I still dress in these more than complicated dresses. Why? Because I love them and they make me feel gorgeous. Ebay is my best friend when it comes to looking for new dresses and accessories to replace my old ones.
And most recently, my geek streak skyrocketed. I've always been a fan of Star Wars (who isn't), but I just got into the glory that is Battlestar Galactica. Talk about an AMAZING TV show. I highly recommend it, even if sci-fi type shows usually don't get you going. Make sure you start with the 4 hour miniseries before renting Season 1. I promise you, you won't regret it :)
The ultimate question regarding all of my "geek out" festivities and activities is this: Why Tiff, why?! Well, it's simple. It's the escapism from my 60% of the time very frustrating life. Being a C6 quad, a lot of things are harder than they should be and it drives me nuts. Watching an episode of BSG or going away for the weekend to a convention or a faire where I can pretend to be someone else keeps me sane. I highly recommend geeky pursuits to disabled peeps everywhere. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about.
