I'm just askin'. It's an innocent question, but it needs to be asked, especially on here....

Why (if you've ever owned a modified van/mini-van you probably already know why)? But for those of you not "in the know," they break down constantly. When you look at all of their accouterments, it's not surprisingly really. With the hand-controls, the ramp, the machine that runs the ramp, the track that the track runs on, the electric buttons that run everything, (do I really need to continue?)....it really is just a clusterf&*%! waiting to happen. I hate being reliant on such a delicate, complicated vehicle. Why does everything in my life have to be so compicated now?

I got a brand-new modified mini-van (Dodge Grand Caravan) last September. It took forever to get the funding for it, so when I finally got it, it was like a national holiday. But I slowly started to see that even with a new van, things still break down a lot. It started the day we drove it out of their parking lot. The hand-control brakes were sticking unbenknownst to me, so as I took her up to 50 mph, soon there was smoke everywhere. We drove it back; fuming. They fixed it, but still...it left a bad taste in our mouths. After that we took her home....and it's been about 10 months since it's been in my possession. But let's just say this - the guys at my fix-it place are very familiar with my face.

The one good thing about all of this is that the van is still under warrantly, so 99% of the time whatever needs fixing is fixed gratis. But still! Do I really want to waste my time - and more importantly, gas - on driving over to their location every month? I don't think so. They apologize unapologetically....they know it ain't right, but the more I think about it, the more I believe this is common with every modified van. It's no one's fault. There are just too many delicate things that can break. And no matter how careful you are, it'll never help, because most of the time they break on their own anyways.

Before this van, I had a 1993 Plymouth mini-van. That too broke down a lot, but I thought it was because of her age....obviously not so.

Tomorrow, I go back in to get my van looked at....again. This time it's the automatic door sensor. It reopens itself on it's own.

God help me before I go insane (seriously).

Gremlins love to pick on cripples. It's just a fact. Any pace the little buggers can screw up your life they will!

The reality is; vans are complex, and modifications are more complex. Put them together and your screwed. And not in a "Thanks, I really needed that" kind a way.

I just keep the technology I depend on to a minimum and hope for the best.  I hope it's working out OK for you Tiff.
