...that makes a 29 year old gal feel old. I saw kids proudly donning their official "11" shirts. Yes people, that's referring to the year they're graduating: 2011. Holy crap where does the time fly? It just feels like yesterday when I was in my high school gym chanting "97-97-nine-nine-nine-nine-ninety seven!" That was the year I graduated: 1997. Over 11 years ago now. Damn.
Is God really trying purposefully hard to make my life a living hell? First a spinal cord injury 1 week before starting my freshmen year in high school, and now, I'm almost 30. I'm officially old! Oh Lord Jesus have mercy on my. Please. Oh, and that reminds me...I thought a cure for SCI was supposed to have come by now? Shows what those researchers know (unfortunately).
Anyways, the reason I put myself through such horrendous torture as in going to a high school football homecoming game, surrounded by kids and teenagers, and perfect 2.5 white families: My best friend C. He brother is a high school senior and plays on the offensive line. She invited me to go, lured me in by promising fresh 'n tasty Sonic (a fabbie chain that recently opened in my home state), and so I had to say yes. In all honesty it actually wasn't that bad. I knew even before parking my van that I was going to feel like an oldster. I had prepared myself. But seeing the young faces! The "11" numbers on their beloved letterman jackets! It was all just a bit too much to handle.
At least, after leaving the game, I had the memory of the crunchy Frito Chili Cheese Wrap to keep me warm. It had, by 9pm, dropped to 45 degrees outside. We could see our breaths, and my poor paralyzed legs were like icicles.
So in conclusion? I may be old, paralyzed, but at least my mini-van is new and the heat works faster than the sun in July. After an hour after having left the game, my legs were warm, and my mind was already onto better things, like which video to rent at Blockbuster ("Half-Baked" won out, btw).
