I'm a sucker for big events, I'm all for promoting awareness for disability causes and I love to ski. Sounds like 3 entirely different things that would never come together, right? Not so! I received a copy of Ski Magazine about 3 weeks ago and as I skimmed through it I noticed a brief section on 'Skiing for a Cause.' Turns out there's this really cool event that gets held every year at Keystone Ski Resort here in Colorado. It's called 36 Hours of Keystone. Part of the money from the event goes to benefit the Keystone Adaptive Center, which helps teach people with disabilities how to ski and snowboard.
When I read that my mind went into overdrive--all three of my things (events, disability awareness, skiing) seem to be embodied in this 36 Hours thing. So, I did some research, made some phone calls and finally entered two teams into 36 Hours of Keystone. That's right, Team Disaboom finally exists! We've got 8 people who are going to sweat out a grueling 36 hours of hanging out with each other, bleary-eyed skiing and Disaboom promoting. Some of us are adaptive skiers, some of us are able bodied and all of us plan to take the mountain by storm. It's going to be one crazy 36 hours and I want every one of you to hang in there with us.
36 Hours of Keystone begins at 9am on Friday, November 30th and comes to an end at 9pm on Saturday, December 1st.
We're going to live-blog the whole thing! That's right, you can spit in the face of your insomnia by constantly re-checking the super-special 36 Hours blog we've set up. Instead of actually getting sleep on our rests we're going to blog about nearly crashing into trees and what it's like to be around Cherl when she's gone 20 hours without sleeping and has a Camelback full of coffee dripping into her veins. Exciting stuff. We'll be posting our reflections and ruminations along with all the pictures the server can bear. Gosh, sleeping is so overrated, alright? Stay up with us and check back to see what's happened. When the event is over and we've woken up from a 2-day recovery nap we'll post video from the time so you can see what happened at 30 frames per second.
So, who have I managed to sucker into the event?
Cherl (she's a writer her at Disaboom)
Jason (another Disaboomer, he'll be taking lots of pictures for us)
Marc Romero (Famous amputee adaptive skier. He just made a movie called "Heroes of the Slopes," which you can get more information about at his awesome website. The film actually just aired on Rocky Mountain PBS last night--really good stuff!)
Ricci Kilgore (Paralympian sit-skier with an awesome story)
Me (Tim)
Neal (loves the outdoors, fellow Disaboomer and is excited about the opportunity to support adaptive skiing)
Howard (Disaboomer and early riser, here's to hoping he can take the graveyard shift)
Jake (our lone snowboarder--keeping us cool)
So, will you tune in, will you keep us company as we assault the slopes through the night and stay up tirelessly to clue you in on the grand adventure? I certainly hope so... Bookmark the 36 Hours Blog.
