A Scientific Study inspired by a Seinfeld episode (you heard me, the scientific community gives heed to Seinfeld) sided with those folks who always get all up in arms about people who dip their tortilla chips more than once--the oft-despised, but salsa loving, 'double dippers.'
This Superbowl Sunday as you bust out the Tostitos and mild salsa (try the hot stuff next time, it's far better...) remember that double dipping spreads germs and that it could kill you (ok, that's probably a stretch). Fox reports (actually, I think the New York Times reported and Fox copied):
Is double dipping really that bad? A new study by Clemson University set out to answer that exact question. According to The New York Times, the study was inspired by an episode of "Seinfeld" in which the character George Costanza is confronted at a funeral reception after dipping the same chip twice.
Clemson University food microbiologist Paul Dawson said he proposed the study to get undergraduate students involved in scientific research. A team of nine students had volunteers bite a wheat cracker and dip the cracker for three seconds into a tablespoon of dip, it was reported.
They repeated the process with new crackers, for a total of either three or six double dips per dip sample. The team then analyzed the remaining dip and counted the number of aerobic bacteria in it. The students found that on average, three to six double dips transferred about 10,000 bacteria from the eater’s mouth to the remaining dip, the Times reported.
The way I would put it is, before you have some dip at a party, look around and ask yourself, 'would I be willing to kiss everyone here?' Because you don’t know who might be double-dipping, and those who do are sharing their saliva with you," Dawson told the Times.
Are you a double-dipper? Are you a germophobe? Do you not care at all?

The best salsa ever is made in Fort Collins! They sell it at King Soopers, it's called Robertos. You can thank me later.
I'm going to pick up some Robertos salsa on my next run to the grocery store. Thanks for the tip!
Well NOW I'm a germophobe, thaaaanks Tim!
Gak! You know, I never actually thought about "double dipping" or it's ramifications until the Seinfeld episode. I never personally did it, unless I had dip on my own plate, because I thought it would make me look piggy. Now I make sure to put dip on my plate from an area that looks untouched. LOL
Ever hear of the six degrees of separation theory? It is based on the premise that everyone in the world
Another Superbowl rolls in full of the requisite lights, million dollar commercials and afternoon chile
Of course I double dip! I occasionally triple dip. My buddies wife goes crazy on double dippers so, just to be the antagonist that I am, i dip, turn the chip around and dip with the clean side. Makes her crazy. Don't even get me started on drinking from the milk jug.
