Some students at a technical college in the Netherlands have developed a walker system for the elderly that is equipped with a simple GPS navigation system. Most GPS systems are developed to be used from vehicles or the outdoors, but the GPS system used in the walkers had to be different as it will be used in and out of doors and must consistently be able to transmit and identify its location:
As project leader Nowack Clark pointed out, however, the GPS systems used by normal satnavs in road vehicles will not work inside buildings because of transmission problems. "Therefore we make use of wireless internet," he said.
The device has been designed to be easy to use even for the most technophobic of Luddites.
The Zimmer Frame has a computer screen with just five buttons.
"Each button has a symbol, such as 'toilet' or 'cup of coffee'," the inventors explain.
"After pressing the button with a cup of coffee, arrows appear on the screen which point the way to the restaurant."
