Ya know, this is some interesting shit. There's just one problem: nobody "normal" gives even half a shit about disabled people. I mean, sure there are organizations devoted to helping the disabled but outside of that, the general public doesn't care. I've been legally blind since birth and I've "seen" (read: observed) how people treat the disabled. Not just me, either. I have disabled friends that get treated like shit too. It's a mostly uncaring world out there when it comes to the disabled. Sure, there are upteen hundreds (if not thousands) of people and organizations out there that are dedicated to the problems associated with different races, religions, skin colors, etc., but where are all the people when it comes to the disabled? They aren't there. It's a sad truth but it's the truth nonetheless.

I've heard it enough times in my life-- that I can't possibly be DEAF because I speak too well. Never mind that I can't understand a single word without a visual cue of some kind-- whether writing, lipreading, signing, or captioning.

to your niece's question about if service dogs can have service dogs. I remember reading a book when I was in probably 6th grade or so about a girl who had a dog as a pet and the dog went blind so she managed to get a retired guide dog for her dog. I wish I could remember the name of the book. Although it was fiction it was really neat. I think there was a sequal too.

I enjoy having conversations with kids about disabilities. Kids can be very insightful and hey are not afriad to ask questions. Kids are very impressionable so the younger the discussion starts the better. I will answer any question kids ask be about my disability, of course the answers differ depending on the age of the kid and who they are. For example, I'll tell my younger cousins more than I would one of my students.
