If traditional medicine is not providing relief for your nagging aches and pains, there are other options one might consider that could provide moderate if not excellent relief. Alternative approaches such as chiropractic therapy are options that work for a number of individuals. Misaligned spines, pinched and/or entrapped nerves and other musculoskeletal issues are successfully treated with chiropractic therapy. As a result, alternative approaches such as chiropractic therapy have become quite popular with individuals suffering with pain due to musculoskeletal conditions.

The theory that supports chiropractic therapy is based on the belief that a spine that is misaligned can be manually adjusted through chiropractic alignments releasing a blockage of energy flow created by the misalignments and in some cases provides immediate relief from pain dependent upon the actual physical problem. The theory supporting chiropractic therapy also ascertains that once the blockage of the energy flow as a result of a misaligned spine is released, healing signals are sent to the brain thereby relieving the pain.

What can one expect when seeking chiropractic therapy? Generally the chiropractor will take a case history and generally will take X-rays to determine if there is a more serious underlying condition prior to making spinal adjustments. Most individuals seeking alternative approaches such as chiropractic therapy to treat misaligned spines generally require more than one visit to achieve maximum relief from pain. Patients can also expect to begin exercises that help to circumvent the underlying problems associated with their conditions. If suffering from a misaligned spine due to overuse syndrome or some other activity, modifications to one's lifestyle might be advised to maximize the quality of treatment and health. In addition to manual spinal adjustments, chiropractic therapy may also entail deep massage therapy.

Does insurance pay for alternative approaches such as chiropractic therapy? Most traditional insurance plans include chiropractic therapy, though there are usually a maximum number of visits allowed. Most plans include coverage that allows for approximately 14 visits; however this may vary according to one's coverage. Members can contact the insurance company ahead of time to verify coverage for chiropractic therapy.

Alternative approaches to medicine such as chiropractic therapy are options to consider when seeking relief from pain due primarily to musculoskeletal conditions. Where chiropractic therapy is certainly an option for some individuals, those being treated for serious illnesses or other medical conditions should clear chiropractic therapy through their physician prior to receiving spinal adjustments to avoid contraindications.

If considering visiting a chiropractor for treatment of musculoskeletal pain, contact the doctor's office ahead of time and request literature explaining chiropractic therapy. Most importantly, get clearance from your physician prior to receiving adjustments to ensure pain is not caused by a more serious condition.
