The hip is a ball and socket joint. The ball is located at the the very top of the thigh bone and is called the femoral head. The socket is located on the side of the pelvis and is called the acetabulum. The femoral head and acetabulum are both covered with shiny, smooth articular cartilage in a normal healthy joint. The edge of the acetabulum is lined with a lip of soft cartilage called the labrum.
