Those of us with arthritis need to take note: a new study shows that it’s important to choose an exercise program that includes education as well. The combination will significantly lessen pain while increasing the level of physical function and activity.
According to the Centers for /Disease Control and Prevention, 19 million Americans limit their activity as a result of arthritis. The condition is the country’s most common cause of disability. Research shows multiple benefits when patients are provided some form of education in addition to working out.
University of Missouri researchers found that education increases the likelihood a patient will stay active for life. Educational components that are effective, according to Marian Minor, professor in the MU Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Professions, include:• One-on-one discussions with care providers• Group interventions• Providing advice on self-monitoring• Providing feedback regarding performance• Goal-setting• Problem-solving
As well as helping patients maintain increased activity levels, educational intervention accounted for increased muscle strength and better mental health, according to lead author Vicki Conn, professor and associate dean of research in the MU Sinclair School of Nursing.
More than 4,111 participants in 28 studies were evaluated , including patients with osteoarthritis, knee arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. All of the studies looked at physical activity after the completion of the education intervention.
