"Sciatica" can be a confusing term. While it is a relatively common medical term used for nerve irritation within the low back, sciatic pain is not always from the sciatic nerve per se. So-called sciatica stems from the back and radiates down the leg, often with associated numbness, tingling, and weakness.

It is important to remember that it is very difficult to injure the spine. While conditions of the spine may be very painful, this pain does not correlate to injury to the spine. Rather than avoiding activity, patients with back-related pain should make every effort to maintain fitness through aerobic and strengthening exercises and everyday activities. Activities can be started in small bursts, 20-30 minutes at a time. In general, sitting, standing, or lying in one position for more than 30 minutes should be avoided. Life should be lived as normally as possible to maintain health and function.
