“Skis get old; skiers never do. Ponce de Leon was just looking in the wrong place.”
According to this mantra from Alta’s Wild old Bunch, Ponce de Leon should have been looking on a snow covered mountain for the Fountain of Youth. This long-time group of regulars at Utah’s legendary powder “Mecca” shares the belief that majestic mountains, bottomless powder, and warm camaraderie are all they need to maintain their youthful enthusiasm for life. Indeed, members of the Wild old Bunch were hiking up and skiing Alta's terrain before the lifts were built in 1938.
The group tended to congregate at the Alpenglow, a tradition that carries on today in the daily 11 a.m. rendezvous at Alf's Restaurant, mid-mountain on the Sugarloaf side, where you’ll find this happily disorganized collection of seniors readily dispensing hospitality, youthful enthusiasm, and sage advice.
Everyone is welcome to join the WoB, with no cost for membership, just the belief in three basic principles:
1. You’re never too old to be young.2. Spectacular mountains and deep powder snow go best with friendly smiles and a helpful attitude to newcomers and visitors.3. Alta is a special place.
