A couple of years ago I was asked by a naïve gentleman why people in wheelchairs tied their shoelaces. Despite being annoyed by his question, I had to admit, it was a valid thought. I suppose, from his point of view (of having never lived with a disability), it would seem unnecessary. So I explained to him why: 1. You tie them so your shoes don’t fall off mid-transfer or when you cross your legs, and; 2. So you don’t look stupid.
As you know, people who use wheelchairs still care a great deal about how they look. Going around with shoelaces untied and looking unkempt is a reflection on one's self. So yes, if you went around like that you would look unkempt; no one wants that, especially if you’re already having to fight all the stereotypes that come with being unable to walk.
Shoes however, if you use a wheelchair, can be a dilemma in themselves for a multitude of other reasons. From everything to edema (swelling of the feet), to sensitive/pressure sore-prone skin, to ankles that need extra support, finding shoes that are good for your feet and don’t look like they came from a nursing home, can be a maddening, never-ending search. Here are some styles, and tips, on how to find footwear that hopefully will end your search and maybe even make you smile when you look down at your tootsies.
Buy your shoes wide: Many brands are now producing shoes that come in what’s called “Extra Wide.” I know that Payless sells several shoes with this option. It’s a fantastic feature for those whose feet swell during the day. For many, regular width shoes just won’t cut it, and by the end of the day their shoes become so tight that their skin can actually get punctured. Not good if you’re a slow healer. Search around by Googling “extra wide shoes.”

I so wish I could wear nice shoes.
I had major surgery on my toes due to strokes. (bones removed ect.) so I have to wear these super wide big "honken" shoes.
But I keep them clean & make everything else as nice as I can.
I can stand for a few minutes, but mostly sit!!
