Gettysburg is typical small-town USA. No one would’ve heard of this miniscule settlement if it weren’t for July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 1863. Nowadays this historical town is a booming tourist site attracting thousands of visitors a year. Young, old, disabled or not; all come to this sacred place to pay their respects and appreciate American history.
When people visit Gettysburg, the first thing they head for is the Gettysburg National Military Park. These 5,700 acres of fields were the battleground for the three-day melee. Tourists can explore this eerily quiet, historic combat-zone in a variety of ways. Your first option is to take a nice, comfortable bus tour that plays a recorded story of the battle as you tour the grounds. There is also a trolley tour complete with Civil War actors. If neither of these strikes a chord, then consider taking a tour right from your own car. There are audio tapes and Licensed Battlefield Guides available to make your personal car tour come alive.
For adventurous individuals, walking/rolling tours are available and are usually 100 percent wheelchair accessible since most of the battlefield is a flat, grassy plain. This is a good option if you really want to get into the reenactment spirit and touch the actual grounds that the soldiers long ago tread themselves. There are even night “ghost” tours available where you join a group to explore the grounds in hopes of perhaps meeting a long lost soul (truly for the morbid!). Either way you decide to tour the battlefield, keep in mind this is a sacred place that demands respect.
