Colorado-based Adaptive Sports Center (ASC), a nationally-recognized nonprofit in Crested Butte that provides life-enhancing outdoor adventure accessible activities to people with disabilities, is launching several cool new programs this season.

From Nordic to Alpine, ‘Boarding to Ski Biking, Snowshoeing to….?
For 2008-09, ASC is offering its ever-popular slate of winter programming—including adaptive alpine skiing, snowboarding and ski biking, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing—along with winter excursions (ice-climbing, hut trips and backcountry skiing to name a few), and a handful of specialized winter camps.  Individuals of all ages with physical and cognitive-related disabilities, as well as families and groups, are invited to participate in ASC’s programming.

Early and late season ski and snowboard lesson discounts are new this year, with individuals seeing full day rates reduced from $145 to $125 and half day rates reduced from $95 to $85 during non-peak periods: November 29 through December 20 and March 22 through April 5 (closing day).

All lessons are taught by ASC’s PSIA adaptive-certified instructors (that’s Professional Ski Instructors of America, by the way!) and include equipment and a “lesson only” ski pass. Full pricing information for all activities can be found at http://www.adaptivesports.org/; scholarships and group rates are also available.

Programs for Adaptive Skiing and Snowboarding
In addition to two popular returning camps—Amputee High Adventure Weekend (Jan. 23 -26, 2009) and Ladies with Abilities (March 28 – 30, 2009)—adaptive ski and snowboard aficionados will want to check out ASC’s newest camps: Mono and Biski Fiesta (Feb. 20 – 22, 2009) and Big Mountain Sessions: Snowboarding (March 20 – 23, 2009).

Mono and Biski Fiesta is geared toward mono and biskiers of all levels who wish to experience a wide variety of terrain on Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Depending on individual interests, participants may choose to take it easy on green or blue groomers, or take on the challenge of black runs or extreme terrain. There will also be an opportunity to demo a range of adaptive ski equipment during the weekend, compliments of Spokes ‘n Motion.

New Adaptive Adventure Camp for Advanced ‘Boarders
Big Mountain Sessions: Snowboarding is a new adventure camp for advanced snowboarders. The first two days of camp will be spent on the mountain, where participants can shred to their heart’s content on the black and double-black in-bounds extreme terrain that Crested Butte Mountain Resort is famous for, with guidance from ASC’s instructors.

The second half of the trip will take place in the nearby Elk Mountains. The group will trek out to a backcountry hut on splitboards (a snowboard that can be split into two parts and used like skis) to enjoy the peace and tranquility only the deep woods can offer (backcountry trip dependent on conditions).
