A form of arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis of the spine that causes swelling between your vertebrae and in the joints between your spine and pelvis. Developing most often in those between 20 and 40 years old, ankylosing spondylitis (also called rheumatoid spondylitis) is more common and more severe in men, and often runs in families.

Symptoms may include hip or lower back pain, eye inflammation, fatigue, and a sense of constriction in the chest. As with other forms of arthritis, the disease is highly individualized, in that each person has a unique experience with ankylosing spondylitis symptoms, remission, and treatment
