Bladder cancer is one of the few cancers that show a definite correlation in occurrence with disability. In fact, studies have shown that individuals with spinal cord injuries may be 100 times more likely to experience bladder cancer than will the general population, although this is still a relatively small number, ranging from less than 1% to 3% of the population. If you have an SCI, and especially if you use in-dwelling catheters, you should be especially diligent about discussing potential risk and possible symptoms with your doctor.
