In this busy world, it’s the last thing you want to think about. However, right now, as you rush about your hectic life, trying to maintain a  balance, you are one of the lucky ones.  There are 15 million unpaid caregivers who either have put their lives on hold, or are working full-time at a job, then rushing home to care for an aging parent.

        Caregiving can be an overwhelming challenge and it’s difficult to stay sane and organized throughout the process.  But you are not alone there are million others in the same situation. Here is a list of things you can do to organize and maintain your sanity.

 Accept the reality

Make a list of everything that must be dealt with

Delegate, delegate, delegate when possible

Make ethical decisions

Put financial matters in order

Don’t procrastinate – follow your “to-do” list

Search and ask for help

Help maintain your elder’s independence

Put yourself in their shoes.  What would you like, what would you need?

Keep a journal of contacts and medications

Handle legal issues in comprehensive and specific way

Make time for yourself, your family, your job, your social life and for recreation

Prioritize your own issues and time constraints

Research any help available

Trust your caregiving instincts, and the elder you are caring for

Pray for patience

Spend time with your elder, visit, call, send cards, flowers and gifts

Find ways to relieve stress

Zone out and reward yourself for a job well done.
