People with diabetes are more likely to have teeth and gum problems. Taking good care of your gums and teeth is very important. Have a dental checkup every six months. Be sure to tell your dentist that you have diabetes and ask your dentist to show you how to take proper care of your gums and teeth.

Dental problems commonly seen in diabetics:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Frequent infections
  • Bad breath
  • Sore gums

Treatment and prevention

  • Maintain routine dental cleaning and care (brush your teeth after every meal and floss once a day)
  • Schedule dental checkup every six months
  • Update your dentist about the status of your diabetes
  • Treatment may include oral surgery
