We’ve all heard the numbers, and possibly experienced this issue in our own lives: obesity is becoming epidemic in the U.S., and the trend is moving upward fast. Weight loss management is a critically important topic, but there are way more questions than there are answers around the key issue: what works?

Coming up with a medically-sound approach to weight loss management has been the touchstone of Dr. Michael Snyder’s career as a weight loss surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery. This type of surgery is reserved for a specific class of overweight people: those whose weight has reached a level where it negatively impacts their health.

According to Dr. Snyder, bariatric surgery is ultimately not about weight loss.  Rather, medical practitioners are concerned about the weight’s effect on the person’s health.  When someone is called “morbidly obese,” this statement means that his weight has reached a point where it has adverse effects on his health.  As  Dr. Snyder points out, “It is never a comment about a patient’s appearance or value as a person.  It is very important to understand that it is not a judgment about the person, but a statement of concern about the patient’s health.”

Introduction to Bariatric Surgery
Dr. Snyder’s interest in working with obese patients, who were considered high risk by most surgeons, came about after meeting patients in Virginia who had had bariatric surgery and not only survived, but had also thrived and enjoyed great health.

“They were happy.  I wondered what the magic was that allowed them to be successful in what I previously had thought was a ridiculously dangerous undertaking,” he recalled. Digging deeper, he discovered that the American College of Surgeons had an entire society of bariatric surgeons, specialists who were successfully helping patients who had previously been morbidly obese live healthy and active lives.

A Commitment to Working with Patients Considered High Risk
Dr. Snyder decided that the challenge of working with high risk patients whose lives could be so dramatically improved through surgery was the career path he wanted. “I went through all of the necessary steps to really understand the patients and the process.  I joined the governing society (www.ASBMS.org) and have been an active member for more than six years, and attended all of the conferences.

“I was taught by and did training with three of the leading surgeons in America, with the result that I am now the regional leader in bariatric surgery, having performed over 2,500 bariatric surgical procedures.” Medical director of his hospital’s bariatric surgery program, Dr. Snyder is asked to consult and lecture on a wide range of weight-related issues, and has helped establish a nationally-recognized Center of Excellence in Denver, CO.

But What About When Bariatric Surgery Isn’t the Answer?
This was the question Dr. Snyder struggled with when treating patients who definitely needed to lose weight because of health concerns, but weren’t sufficiently overweight to qualify for bariatric surgery.
He thought about the mechanics of bariatric surgery – essentially, creating a way for the body to feel full with much less food – and realized that it might be possible to mirror that feeling of fullness  with a different approach.

The Fullbar Solution
After years of experimentation, Dr. Snyder finally realized his goal of creating a non-invasive, natural, easily-used approach to recreating the “fullness” sensation so critical to long-term, healthy weight loss management. Based on eating a specially-formulated type of weight loss  bar (and now related snacks and drinks), the Fullbar solution he designed helps your body feel full with less food.

“The best way to lose weight naturally is to feel full by eating less” notes Dr. Snyder. “FullBar diet bars, FullBites diet snacks, and Aquafull diet drinks were inspired by the same scientific principles of weight loss surgery: when you feel full, you will eat less.”

Individualized, Healthy Weight Management is the Goal
Whether the approach he’s taking is bariatric surgery or an entrepreneurial venture creating an innovative new solution for healthy weight loss management, Dr. Snyder has one goal: to help individuals experience the benefits of a living life at a healthy weight. Backed up by the experience and authority of years of weight-loss research and successful surgery, Dr. Snyder is uniquely positioned to bring that expertise to bear on America’s battle with obesity and weight management.
