jel369, i'm so glad you have a supportive husband, but i understand the need to talk to others who can relate better with what you're going through. i feel the same way, that's why i belong to several message boards and have made great friends

I am so glad that I found this site, it is a really great place to meet friends and have someone to talk to with the same problems that I deal with daily. I have thought a few times about writing a self help book for people with simlar problems, and maybe helping them deal with the changes that they are about to face, I have done a little research about writing a book, but is is a scary thing to take on, because I dont want to give out medical advise, and get into trouble. But on the same token, I would like to be able to help others that are facing the same problems. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I have a lot of back painfrom a car accident that broke my back in three places C5, L4-5. this left me with limited movement, I can say I'm lucky in a way because I can still walk a little bit. My back is unstable, the doctors never did anything to fix it, being on my feet compresses the spine and sends severe, sharp pain everywhere, I cannot lie flat due to the pain and also It makes it very difficult to breath. and that's just the tip of the iceburg.
Doctors really make me mad at times. They dont listen. I have done physical therapy, both on land and in the pool, and it aggrivated everything upon letting them know that they just said I wasn't trying hard enough and not doing what they said. Or just to get me to be quiet they would give me drugs that the side effects were worse than the pain.
I have also looked other places, natural healing type things. I have thought of trying reiki, but havent found anyone in my area. I have found other things to help. A friend of mine suggested using essential oils and gave me some peppermint oil to try. It had a warming effect and actually loosened up the muscles it was applied to and decerased the pain to a more tollerable level. It is only a tempory fix and can get expensive, though not as expensive as some of the drugs out there, I have found it to work good with me. I not only use peppermint, but I mix it with winergreen and spearmint in a mixing oil and rub it on the painful areas as needed. The only side effect I've noticed is a strong mint smell that some people might think is bengay. I still have a lot of pain, but as long as i use those oils I can get through a day and have even been competing in wheelchair martial arts, believe it or not I have a few moves that for ablebodied martial artists are difficult to do and i make them look easy.

glad to hear about your experience, Tara. Peppermint has always had a soothing effect with me. The wheelchair martial arts sounds really cool! Don't want to mess with you...

If it wasn't for the essential oils I wouldn't be able to do martial atrs. Wheelchair martial arts is really cool. I "threaten" some people saying I'm gonna "Kick your Butt" but I never do. I just rubed on more oil because I just finished with my martial arts class for the night. my instructors are working me harder because I'm going to compete at the Diamond nationals in October. When they work me harder the pain increases, I dont mind that type of pain, it's worth it to me.

I know more about than I ever thought I would.Neuropathic pain, bone pain, soft tissue pain, referred pain etc. Before the injury and subsequent surgeries, physical pain was something I took a pill for and it went away- eventually.
I've got chronic pain due to CES. The pain I have today never goes away. It never gets better only different. Winter is better, summer is horrendous.
I take Percocet and Darvocet and use a TENS unit sometimes. I also have a home interferrential unit. I soak in the tub. I lay down. I bitch and moan. Sometimes moving around helps.Mostly, just sucking up what the drugs can't take of gets me through.
But what works the best is getting involved in an art project.
Swimming is great too. If I could only slosh around in a 4 foot motorized tub of water, I'd have little need for narcotics at all

I understand what you are saying about taking a pill, I too get tired of it, I told my husband if he shook me I would rattle from all the pills that I take.
Shortly after having surgery, my aunt was visiting and told me that when she had some kind of surgery that the physical therapist had her swimming in a pool and it helped her heal a lot faster. I sometimes wish that I still lived in Arizona, I could go swimming all of the time. I now live in Kentucky, and too far from civilization, or a lake.
I have tried the TENS unit for the muscle pain, but I have nerve damage in my back from 22 yrs ago, and they told me that I was never going to get better. I told them that I was not going to let my disability rule me, I was going to take back my life, I have to say that it is a lot tougher than I thought that it would be.
After having a spinal fusion, and decompression surgery all in one day, I have so many restictions impossed by the doctors that I sometimes feel that I should never get out of bed again, I did take up selling Avon for a while, but it was getting extreamly difficult to get in and out of the car all of the time, not to mention the cost that was involved, and taking medications that make you sleepy all of the time, I was afraid that I was going to have a car accident and I have already been there and done that. I am taking up molding clay, and making gifts for people for holidays, and I do find that relaxing. I am also taking a home study course for medical billing and coding.
