    • I was diagnosed with Limb-Girdle MD at age 14, even though I was born with it.

I met my hubby at age 22 and we married a little over a year later in 1988. I Thank God every day for giving him to me. The fact that he looked past my disability and accepted me for who I am shows what kind of a person he is. We have a healthy 18 year old daughter.

And if I didn't realize how much he cared for me before, 2007 - now has definitely shown me. I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in Feb.'07. Went through 6 chemo treatments, found out that I was cancer-free Aug. 15,'07, and have been cancer-free ever since.

I always said my MD wasn't going to get me and I definitely wasn't going to let cancer get me either.

I just try to keep a positive attitude on things even though I may get frustrated at times.

    • Hi Dodie,

My name is Jackie, I'm 43 and was diagnosed with LGMD when I was 20, but  I knew I had it before being diagnosed.  Out of 6 kids, 5 of us have LGMD.  Coincidently my mom's name is Dody (short for Dorothy).  Your message was very inspiring.  I'm happy that you have been cancer free, I can't imagine having to deal with that with the limitations of the LGMD.

I wish you all the best.  I't so nice to hear a positive person discussing their blessings.  YOU GO GIRL!

    • Thanks for the welcome!

That is a coincidence. My name is pronounced the same as your mom's. Some people think it's pronounced Dottie, but nope.

My sister & I are the only kids in my family. She's healthy. I don't know of anyone in my family history with MD. Guess I was supposed to be the unique one.

Being dealt cancer on top of having MD wasn't an easy thing to live with, but I just kept my positive attitude and stayed strong "mentally" and I believe that's what helped me survive.

      Hope you're health is good.

    • Hi Dodie,

Thanks for inquiring about my health.  So far, I can't complain.  I've had a few stumbles along the way but nothing serious (Thank GOD).  I too have been blessed with a great husband, no kids but I do have a yellow lab who is like our child.

Staying mentally strong is what I strive for daily.  It's not easy, but like I try to do - take one day at a time-.  I wish you continued success with your health.

      Take care & God Bless,

      Jackie

    • Congrats on having a great husband too.

There aren't many out there that would accept us with our disabilities.

A pet is a good child to have.

We had to have our 16yr. old dog put down a month ago because of cancer and arthritis. It was so hard to do. Now we have 1 cat inside and 2 cats and a dog outside.

Thanks for the wish for continued success with my health. I'm just hoping the cancer never comes back. I know that my MD will keep getting worse over time though and I have to accept it.

Take care & Have a nice day!

    • Hi Dodie,

Thanks for sharing your story.  I find it helpful and inspiring to hear about other people's situations and their will to fight.  I'm 25, and just diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease.  It makes me have muscle symptoms similiar to lgmd.  My symptoms also started several years ago, although I just never mentioned it until recently.  I'm in med school to become a doctor and have made the resolve to remain positive and strong, as well.  We are all in this together, fighting side by side!

       hugs,

      Louann

    • What a nice way to reach out to others, my name is Bernadette I am 34 and have had LGMD since birth. I am the youngest of 7, 3 of us have this. I consider my disease a blessing, I feel It has made me stronger, I have had to prove myself a little more, and never felt sorry for myself. Dodie, I think It Is wonderful that you have beat the cancer, and that you have a wonderful husband by your side.
