    • I think they get used to their own smell of smoke.  What I don't like is when I've been around smokers just in passing and only are around a couple minutes, and I come home and think ewww I smell like them. Takes airing out and washing your clothes and yourself. I agree it's nasty!

    • Smoking is worse than drinking, at least if someone is drinking next to you then you do not end up smelling like booze (unless they spill it on you).  There are some people that have smoked so long that their clothes get a moldy smoke smell in them and you will get it on your clothes if you even go over to their house or get in their vehicle!  I do not allow anyone to smoke in my house so most smokers I know stay out on the porch when they come to visit me, I will go out there to socialize with them.

That is also one of the biggest turn-offs for me anymore, nothing like seeing a beutiful girl walking down the street and then see her light up.Ick!

Thankfully there are begining to be more places that are becoming smoke free.Party!!!

    • The most annouying thing is that they hangout around doorways smoking.  You have to go right through a cloud of smoke to get into the building.   Not to mention the smokers that feel they need to blow that last breath of smoke out inside the building.

    • I live in N. California and thankfully when you go out to eat or go to a bar there is no smoking, but I agree they hang outside, and that last puff of smoke usually comes back inside.  Not much you can do about it besides hold your breathe or cover your face.  There are more signs outside of businesses, government centers, schools etc, that say no smoking without 30 feet of the doors.  Most seem to respect that, there are always those that don't. That's kinda how life is.   Growing up my dad smoked about 1.5 packs a day. He basically always smoked in some spot but now and then he's go into the bathroom and smoke and the next one to go in there basically passed out.  He stopped smoking, and I guess I got used to that smell.  Now that no one close to me smokes, I'm more aware of the smell.  Hang in there, some things we have no control over.

    • I wish we could just outlaw smoking, but it is going to be a harder fight than just that.  The national government reps are partners with the big tobacco companies, they fund their campains and give then extra money.  What we have to do is convince the lower government like cities and counties, the ones that are not getting any money from the Marbro man...lol.  In the "Bible belt" of America here in Arkansas they have cities and counties that are dry still, no alcohol.  The 21st amendment repealed the prohibition act but they left the decisions up to each city and county.  If they can do it with alcohol then they can just as easily do it with tobacco!

    • Lets outlaw McDonalds and Snickers bars while we're at it.  Oh and alcohol and lets see what are all the other things that cause health issues.  While we're at it maybe we need to outlaw all disabled people because we know that costs a bundle in tax dollars every year.  Outlawing behaviors others dislike, even ones that cause health problems is a very slippery slope folks.  Legislation that protects others like no smoking in public places now that is a different story because it is the responsibility of the people to protect themselves from dangerous behaviors of others.  Continuing education campaigns and research into ways to break the addiction both mental and physical of smokers is essential if we intend to have a real impact on something that is much more than a habit.  You all need to be very careful what you wish for however when it comes to mandating behaviors etc.  because you just might get what you wish for and when it doesn't stop there well ........

That concludes this public service announcement from someone addicted to nicotine who continues the struggle to break free of the cycle of addiction.

    • Good for you on quiting smoking, unfortunately not everyone has enough will power to do the same.  People are only going to quit when they want to do it, until then the only option I see is to make it less desirable to smoke.  Rasie the price of cigerettes and cut back on where you can smoke.  I am sure that you have already talked to her, but maybe get the rest of the family in on it and make it an intervention to show her that everyone wants her to stop smoking so she (and you) can live longer, healthier lives.  That is just one thought, hopefully someone else will have an idea.  I heard on the news that some places it is illegal to smoke in your own car if you have someone under 18 with you.  About time!

    • I can see that you people don't have a real grasp on the finer points of addiction and that not every person can break the cycle of addiction just because they want to.  More and more research is being done on the changes in the brain of smokers and medications are being researched that may be able to help handle those changes.  We must continue to educate young people not to ever start smoking and set off those chain reactions in the brain, we must continue to keep smokers seperated from non smokers (especially children) to protect them from the health damages of second hand smoke, including the possible activation of triggers in the brain that might cause them to begin to smoke and we must also find ways to make help available to all smokers who are struggling to break free of the addiction.

Once again this public service announcement has been brought to you by a nicotine addict who continues to struggle to break free of a vicious addiction.

    • Beakerless, don't get me wrong-I think that the government does control too much of our lives as it is, but smoking is one of the things that they should stop.  If getting fat from McDonalds and Snickers were the only thing to compain about then our lives would not be that bad.  So we would have to get wider chairs, but at least we are not carrying around oxygen bottle with us.  When someone gets fat they are doing it to themself, not the guy next to them.  That is one of the main reasons that driving and driving was made illegal, it was hurting other people who were innocent (at least of drinking).  You can still drink and drive on your own land (as long as there is no public access), just not on public roads.  That is what they should do with smoking, treat it like drinking.  You can not drink while walking down the sidewalk so you should not be able to smoke walking down the side walk.  They could make smoker's bars and you go there to smoke if you want to do it in public.  I like breathing smoke free air.  With that said I will thank you for at least trying to quit smoking.  Every person that quits is one less person that is polluting the air and their body only to fill the tobacco companies wallets.  They do not care about smokers, they only want more money.

    • I can understand the addictive qualities of smoking... my stepfather struggled with trying to quit for years (even after a quadruple bypass surgery). However, I have met a lot of smokers who are just plain rude about it. Whatever happened to the phrase "Mind if I smoke?". Nowadays many think it is perfectly okay to just light up whenever they feel like with no regard whatsoever for the non-smokers around them.

I live in Arizona and they just passed a ban on smoking indoors in public places last year. It has made such a huge difference for non-smokers who want to go out to restaurants, bars, and clubs. No more coming home unable to stand the smell of one's own clothes.

    • Beaker I hope you don't shoot me for this girl,  Yes of course it's an addition, probably one of the worst addictions to ever exsist.  I have no problem with if you smoke, it just seems there are some very respectful and careful smokers. Those who are aware of other people and non smokers around them. They'll walk away a bit so people won't be bothered, and they aren't going to blow smoke in some one's face.  Then there are the rude, selfish, it's all about me smokers, who don't care if they are blowing it in some one's face and gagging them etc. I've seen a few people who would actually endanger some one's life and other's through smoking.  One guy a couple weeks ago was outside of an office smoking, where there was a no smoking sign posted. Next to him was an elderly gentleman with oxygen on. Now tell me how rude and unsafe is that. I told the man that the other one had oxygen on and he said, "Well babes, we all gotta leave this planet at some point." I just think some could use a little more manners and be more careful is all.  Every one has a right to there little fix, being smoking, drinking, exercising, etc etc. There is just a polite way and an improper way of doing things.  My dad's lungs to this day from smoking 40 some years are terrible. When he gets sick he has trouble with catching his breathe and when sick has that "smoker cough" thing going on.  I know a lady who smokes and in her room right next to her bed she has an oxygen tank with the tubes.  Next to the other side of her bed is a chair and she smokes in it watching TV. Live oxygen on while smoking, I'm suprised she hasn't blown up the entire neighborhood yet.  She's tried patches, gums, any help smoking device other known to man, then she finally tells her son, " I just don't want to quit" She is on one side of her house and her son on the others. But what if she ever blew the house up, it killed her son and left her alive. Would it take such a tragedy to make her think about other people.  No one's opinion here is wrong or write, we are just speaking from our own experiences and what we've observed.  You know I love ya, you know where I stand on so many issues.

    • I smoked cigarettes for 45 years. It took 4 strokes to get me to stop, then I started smoking cigars for about 2 years until my 5th stroke. Now I don't smoke anything. Whoever said you will feel so much better after you quit was probably not a smoker. I feel worse, but I don't stink anymore.
