    • A study by German researchers, published in Archives of Internal Medicine, found that 47 percent of patients in the acupuncture group found relief from low back pain as opposed to only 27 percent in the Western conventional medicine group.

Co-author of the study, Dr. Heinz Endres of Ruhr University Bochum in Bochum, Germany, said, "Acupuncture represents a highly promising and effective treatment option for chronic back pain."

Dr. James Young of Chicago's Rush University Medical Center said, "We don't understand the mechanisms of these so-called alternative treatments, but that doesn't mean they don't work."

These findings have already led to more health insurance coverage for acupuncture in Germany.  Health insurance companies in the United States need to step up to the plate as well.

    • Some caveats about that study - which to mainstream media is more than happy to ignore often-times.

      • The participants had already failed with "western medicine" (which is the media's term and not the authors) before the study. If I remember correctly, the average time for the groups with LBP was 7-8years.  So, in actuality, it's pretty amazing that 27% in that group actually improved.
      • This is huge - THE "FAKE" ACUPUNCTURE GROUP DID JUST AS WELL AS THE REAL. This could mean a couple of different things: 1.  There is a physical response that improves pain with just having needles stuck in your body.  Doesn't matter where or by someone with knowledge of energy "meridians".   2.  Or, as traditional medicine hasn't worked for them in the past, a new approach brought with it new (and maybe positive) expectation that are different than their expectations from the usual treatment that we already know has not worked for them.  A.K.A. the placebo effect.
      • No standardization of the "western" medicine group, and the acupuncture group was allowed to receive "western" medicine as long as it didn't exceed a certain level.  Why is this important?  The study cannot be reproduced.  That doesn't make it worthless, but it is a flaw that the media won't report on.

Lastly, I want to touch on the placebo effect.  This is a very valid response (read - it's a real effect) and can be a very important tool in helping people.  Using the term "placebo" doesn't mean the treatment is invalid and shouldn't be used.  However, we should recognize it and be honest about the way a treatment is portrayed.

Here is a link to the full text of the German acupuncture study for any of you that want to read and come to your own conclusions.

Here is a similar study from the Archives of Internal Medicine that looked at a similar population and with similar results.

    • Thanks for the input. My doctors have written me off since CT & MRI show no particular reason for lower back pain, They say "live with it". No thanks! I think it's sciatica but I'm not sure. I have my first accupincture appt. on Fri. 2/1 Austin
