I had a severe, nearly lethal hemorrhagic stroke in early 2001, and it left my left side very weak. When I first started working on walking, someone else had to slide my left leg forward for me, while I stepped with the right. Then I progressed to being able to slide my left foot/leg forward, with a piece of waxed paper under my foot. I could cover about five feet, along a parallel bar, this way. Then it was about 10 feet, with a hemi walker. Now I can walk about 50 feet, totally unassisted, using a quad cane. And this morning, my mother observed that my left steps and my right steps look virtually the same.I've come a looong way!Sometimes, especially later in recovery, when progress is slower and not so dramatic, it helps to look back to where you were.

That's huge! Congratulations! I'm inspired by your progress, Carla, and your positive energy, and it makes me want to get out and walk around the neighborhood (it's snowing again, drat). People talk to me & think wow, he's got it together, but I need as much supporting structure underneath propping me up as the next guy or gal. I went looking for other ways of conveying the thought, positive energy, without much luck. There are words that come close, like the noun "sunshine", and the adjective "electric." Any suggestions?

That's excellent, Carla! I think you're right: we do need to remember where we came from since our strokes, not before. It's HUGE!

One small step, it's the beginning of a new and great journey of your post-stroke life - Hooray ! It also marks that first level on your independence and needing others to take you places or do things, like errands or trips to corner store. Plan on small journeys experience your room, your house , your block and neigborhood in small baby steps. You'll be amazed at things you never knew existed and discover the first time. I'm doing just that now - even if they are little inconsequential things - better than wallowing in self pity you'll have something new to talk about or discover and just keep it to yourself. Whatever works for you.
I say concentrate on you and your rehab. You've already taken the first step don't stop there - push on even though it hurts. In the long run - you will be able to run again - I can't now, run that is. I'm working up to free myself from using a cane and maybe even playing tennis again. Everything is possible now ... think positive
