Nope, I don't have diabetes (yet), hopefully it will stay that way!

    • I've got some slight ataxia in my left leg due to stroke. It's not much but it affects my gait when I run.

    •  Hi beasey!  I guess more specifically I'm wondering if anyone here has hereditary ataxia, such as SCA or FA, vs. ataxia as a symptom of another condition.  Either way, it's all not very much fun, right?! :P

    • The only places I've seen other people with fredrichs ataxia are on movement disorder sites (I hang out on those because I have dystonic CP.)  Maybe when this site gets more members. . .

    • Perhaps I'm the resident FAer for now, then! Nightengale, what other sites do you hang out on?  I don't know of many so I'd love to find out.

    •  Hello.  I have FA as well.  It would be nice to talk to someone else who has the same condition. To get pointers and share advice, and just talk.  Write back.

    • Ataxia is a symptom.  It means poor balance and coordination problems, including coordination of the legs, hands or speech muscles.  A person can have ataxia from a bunch of different causes.  If a person has sensory loss in the feet, they may have ataxia from haivng trouble feeling the ground as they walk.  Ataxia can also be the result of damage to the back part of the spinal cord.  And it can also be caused by damage to the back part of the brain, the cerebrellum.

Friedreich's Ataxia is a specific condition that causes ataxia.  It is hereditary and causes progressive damage to the spinal cord.  Symptoms usually start in childhood or adolescence.
