    • Hi everyone,

I am part of a group called Fredom by Design.  Fredom by Design is a non-profit, community based division of AIAS.  Our team consists of both Architecture and Interior Design students.  With this combination, we hope to provide a wide variety of solutions, inside and outside the home.  Here are some examples of the services we can provide:
Rooms can be more accessible by installing new levered hardware.
Kitchens can become more usable by removing the base of existing cabinets and lowering wall cabinets.
Mobility can be achieved by changing flooring materials.
Access into and out of the home can be accomplished by building a simple ramp.
With these and other modifications, we hope to provide our clients with more independence and a higher quality of life.

We are looking to help people who are unable to qualify for other assistance. Once we have a potential client, our volunteers survey their home to identify obstacles. Once the issues are identified, we design a plan to improve the safety and quality of life for our client.  We are usually able to raise enough money to modify one or two of the most pertinent issues.

If you know of anyone we can help, or know of another organization that could point us in the right direction, please let me know.  Also, please remember that our main priority are those in need that are NOT able to get proper assistance elsewhere.

Here is a little more information on Freedom by Design. http://www.aia.org/k_a_200605_FBD

      Thank you very much!!!

“Life safety, dignity, and comfort... Freedom by Design (FBD), an American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) national program... service to [our] communities by helping individuals with physical, mental, or financial disabilities to live safely, comfortably, and with dignity. Minor modifications to the homes of these individuals address their struggles with such everyday tasks as getting in and out of showers, ascending stairs, and opening doors.”

      Mathew, John -

Folks, as I see it, FBD and VHALI (“Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island”) having potential synergies.

John, see (http://www.aia.org/k_a_200605_FBD) for more data on FBD. If it hasn’t been changed yet, just ignore the name at the bottom of the page; Mathew is now the contact. The phone number (202-626-7497) remains the same.

Mathew, you mentioned NYIT had one of your 130 chapters. NYIT has a campus in the heart of Nassau County in Old Westbury (http://www.nyit.edu/campus_life/old_westbury/). You can learn more about us, VHALI, at (http://www.mhanc.org/default.aspx?PageID=789), with our mission statement and list of members at the “To learn more about the Veterans Health Alliance of Long Island” link on that page. As the page doesn’t spell-it-out, John’s phone is (516.489.1120 ext 1101). Which reminds me...

John, could you have my organization changed to read: The Town of Oyster Bay Veteran Services Division.

Mathew, ‘that’ was James Redfield’s “Celestine Prophecy.”

Here’s to our groups being able to help one and other...
