    • I am really new to this. I just discovered this site through an e-mail.  I am 57 years old. I got polio when I was 9 years old. I was wondering if anyone can relate to getting older with polio?

    • Hi Secret!

Welcome to the site...I can't know exactly what it's like to be getting older with polio because my disability is different (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) and I'm 28 but I'm sure we can relate on many other levels of being people with disabilities in different phases of life-I know I'd enjoy learning from you and I'm glad you've joined us here!

If you have any questions or would like to chat sometime, feel free to drop me a line!

      See you around the forums,

      Kara

    • Hi Secret,

Welcome to Disaboom-I do not have polio, however, I do use a wheelchair. I'm a C5/C6 quad.

      Stay Strong

    • Hi Secret, I do have PPS and had Polio when I was 15 months old. I had 19 ortho surgeries my the time I 16. But that got down to one leg brace and use of my crutches occasionally and that was from a neck & back brace and 2 full leg braces. I began to have new problems when I was 27 and was diagnosed with Post Polio when I was 36. I am now 55 and have gone from a 3-wheeled scooter to a full rehab powerchair for the past 10 years. I can really relate to aging with Polio and PPS. You can respond to my post here or send me an email. My email is on the web site listed below, it is devoted to PPS and you only need to click on the "Email Me" icon to get touch with me. I will help in anyway I can. Best Wishes, Linda

    • Hey Secret! Welcome to Disaboom. I'm right below the knee amputee, and have never had polio. There are several here who have had it though, in addition to Linda. Good luck to you.

      Becky

    • Welcome to Disaboom ,Secret

Yes I know what its like to age with PPS. i am 59 and got Polio when I was 11 months old. Was a light case so was able to get around wittout help until a decade ago, told had PPS ...then made a cane to use. Dr said that it was not Polio showing up again but premature aging of the nerves and body functions that Polio affected long ago.

Told me there was no cure and no medication that could help me. Told to take two Alieve a day for the arthritis that has settled in all my weak places, spine, back, hips, knees, feet. Balance has really taken a hit. Fell twice in last three years, once shattered right kneecap...had to replace the entire thing and last dec fell and broke three toes, all on Polio leg. Took me three years to get to where I can walk anywhere without help. Now use a walker with wheeles and a seat to get around outside my house. Dr said i will eventually graduate to the chair but not right now.

Was working until first of this year....trying to find a job outside the house is difficult when you have a walker preceeding you. Trying to accept being slower and resting more. Ignored body signals for most of young life...now have to listen and deal with them or be very sorry. Am just starting to get SSDI and that's another change in life. Also found that i have high cholesteral, blood pressure, blood sugar and my thyroid is out of wack........all presents from my aging body. Only thing holding me together is a strong faith in Jesus and my family's support.

Sorry I've nattered so much Secret...but welcome to Disaboom. You will find friends who accept you as you are, will give you great advice and will allow you to be your self....cranky bits and all.

      Blessings

      Becky W.
