Hi my name is Jayn and I was finally diagnosed 5 years ago after suffering for years with symptoms that made me think that I was crazy and needed to be put away and almost was. On top of that I had an alcohol/drug addiction that didn't help my situation, but I have since overcome.
When I was a child I suffered from ADDHD only there wasn't a name for it then, only a label, "problem child" and it stuck with me all through my school years ~ bummer, even though I was an A student. How I managed that is beyond me, with all my melt downs.
Due to my severe swings of mania and depression I lost money, relationships and eventually everthing I owned until I finally sought help and got medication. The first set of meds I was on made me gain so much weight that I looked like a small blimp so I was changed to a set of meds that was supposed to help me lose the weight. They did alright, but I ended up suffering from severe side affect complications that almost killed me ~ I had to be in the hospital for almost 2 weeks to get the drugs out of my system.
I was put on a different set of meds that seemed to work at first, but made me gain weight again, then they stopped working, so I stopped taking them at the end of 07. I just recently returned to my doctor and began taking a new med that I have researched on the internet and it is working, and my life is good again or at least as good as it is going to get.
Hi kjayn1, I am new here and BP 1 as well. I know where you are coming from, you said you are on a new med, I think I have been on them all in the last year (diagnosed in late '06). No big breakthroughs yet, if you don't mind me asking, what is the new med that is hel, ping you now? I'm glad to hear something is working for you!
bigdaddy61 thank you for your reply. I was taking Abilify, Atavan, Prozac, and Topomax twice a day and it did not help my cycling. In fact I was cycling faster than an eye blink so I stopped taking it last Sept for the option of natural remedy of HGH and SAM-E tha seemed to help somewhat, then I got sick with the flu and didn't take anything and went into a deep 3 month depression. Last month I finally went to my doctor and got rid of all the other medications and had her give me a new one, EffexorXR along with the Topomax. So far the EffexorXR has kept me on an even keel, but for how long remains to be seen.
The best med I've had so far was Geodon, but I can no longer take it as I suffer severe side effects from it, but I was on it for 14 months and I felt great ~ to bad I can no longer take it. All I can do now is see how long the new meds last, then just keep trying and never give up hope, My fear is being over medicaed, like before.
Well I'm glad Effexor is working for you, I'm now trying myrapex and am seeing a little positive movement. Hang in there!
