I don't mind EXCEPT when people literally trip over me to do it or get MORE in my way to make a scene that they're helping me OR when my boyfriend is in the most logical and appropriate place to open it for me...he does so and they jerk it out of his hand. OK...so I guess sometimes I doStick out tongue

That is so rude! Good deeds actually need to be good! lol

    • I like it if a man holds the door, because I think it wouldn't hurt our society to return to some basic courtesies.

But I sure can get all my doors myself.

And what really cracks me up is that suddenly all people hold automatic doors for me. They rush in front of me and step on that contact area, and then they hold a hand before the door. As if the door could close while they are standing on the contact.

But I say thankyou anyway. And of course I'm holding doors too.

      Good!

People mean well, they really do. My mom was telling me that she stopped holding doors for disabled people after she had been laid into more than once by someone who thought she was being patronizing. I had that happen once, too. It's so unfortunate. I mean, I can see why, but it's just not appropriate when people are doing the best they can.

    • Sometimes I say "Thanks you" if they already have it open, or I will just say "I can get it" if they are going for the door (like the smokers standing out in front).  I also look over my shoulder as I go through a door to see if anyone is behind me and I hold it for them.  I am a little old fashioned I guess because if a lady is coming to the door at the same time I pull it open and let her through first.  I had a little old lady coming up to the door at the DMV as I was going out, I opened the door for her and she looked at me and said she should be getting it for me.  I just simply replied something about that is just how I was rasied...lol.

    • Absolutely not!  I used to mind a lot of things like door holding and helping me reach for something, especially when I was a teenager.  Now that I'm almost 50, I can honestly say I'm comfortable with having help when needed.  After all, "No man is an island"!  Everyone needs a little help now and then!

    • Heh, I didn't see this topic before I posted my first blog entry.   For me, it depends on the situation and the person.  I despise those who insist on holding the door for me (the topic of my blog entry), as if they know better than I what assistance I require.  Some are blatantly smug and condescending; some are very nice and simply trying to be helpful.

I think it comes down to their attitude and my mood.  Sometimes I am very grateful for the gesture, but overall I can do without it.

    • This is a great question. Personally, I have no problem at all having a gentleman open or hold a door for me and I always make of point of saying thank you with a smile. I find it amusing that people don't just accept a kindness from a stranger, but look for reasons why they are doing it. "They don't think I can do it myself, or am incapable of doing it myself. There is nothing wrong with common courtesy, and even some chevelry (sp). Don't look for the reason why someone is being kind. Just accept the kindness and pay it forward. Personally, being treated like a lady is refreshing. I will hold the door open for anyone who is coming in right behind me or coming out of a door as I am going in. It's just being friendly. dont' look for alterial motives, just accept that some compassionate person is just trying to help out. The altrnative is having the door slammed in your face. "Any act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted" Good question.
